Tech-giant Google has such a strong, easily recognisable brand but it was lacking from their Auckland office, which simply had walls painted in the Google colours. The 150m2 space needed to be brought to life, with a Kiwi flavour and a fit-out that would impress the Google staff and make them proud to work there. There were also functional requirements to consider: three internal meeting rooms, a storage/utility area and open-plan desking. Visually, the office overlooked the Auckland Harbour – something staff needed to benefit from, rather than having empty meeting rooms hogging the view.

This space was built secretly, hidden from the Google staff down the corridor who didn’t know they were having a new office built for them. Keeping a construction project quiet was incredibly difficult and required constant supervision from us and our contractors. The timeframe was incredibly tight, with a six-week turnaround from working drawings to completion. We had just under 3 weeks to complete the fit-out from start to finish, including new walls, air-conditioning, lighting, sprinkler alterations, flooring, painting, graphics, furniture installation, joinery – the whole shabang!

What could be more Kiwi than a bach?! We made the three meeting rooms into baches, built from weatherboards and painted in Google red, yellow and green (with the office door in Google blue) to keep the Google brand strong.

We were inside the space when the Google staff saw it for the first time and, for us, it was one of the most rewarding finishes to any project – it was fantastic to see the awe and amazement on their faces. We had successfully achieved the objective: to create a space that the Google staff were proud to be in and show to their customers.
